The prevalence of obesity in adults has increased in three folds from 10% in 1977 to 30% between 2011-13 in New Zealand.

Swinburn (2008), explained the reason for the increase in obesity, which is largely attributed to the modern lifestyles and living environment.

Reductions in physical exercise together with the presence of cheap, energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods have been witnessed in over the last three decades. This report looks at how obesity epidemic has impacted different birth cohorts in Tairawhiti.

Below is a summary of new Zealand obesity statistics. From the figure, between 2011-2013, it was found that 35% of New Zealand population adults were overweight and 30% were obese.
