Ted Nelson is one of the world’s pioneers of information technology, creating the terms hypertext and hypermedia. He is also a sociologist and a philosopher. Hypertext is software that allows its users to vastly cross-reference between “related texts and associated graphic material” (Quinn, 2017). 1965 marked a new era with the production of hypertext by Ted Nelson, a sociology graduate student. Hypertext was referred to as a “linked network of nodes containing information. The links allowed readers to visit the nodes in a nonlinear fashion” (Quinn, 2017). Nelson further proposed a system called Xanadu, which was a worldwide system of connected literature. Hypertext can be mostly seen on webpages when a particular word, letter, or sentence is a highlight in blue, sometimes underlined, and has a link attached to it when clicked on, opening something related to it., most times a definition.
Nelson promoted the hypertext idea in his book Literary Machines.

In adopting this point of view, a person is to picture themselves in the position of “free and equal persons who jointly agree upon and commit themselves to principles of social and political justice”. The primary differential characteristic of the original position is “the veil of ignorance”, which states to ensure impartiality of judgment, the parties are deprived of all knowledge of their characteristics and social and historical circumstances (Freeman, 2019).

Just like everything else in the world, I firmly believe internet addiction exists, and the facts are there to prove it all around us. In current society, we can almost, if not completely, say that almost nothing can be accomplished without the internet. In our places of work, school, hospitals, the internet is an integral part of means of operations, and without it, utter chaos may be inevitable. Although one can say this does not prove internet addiction, does it not? Neuroscientists Richard Davidson alluded that the internet has “become like a drug”, and psychiatrists Gerald Block argues that it is a common disorder in the areas of gaming, sex, and email/text. She further stated that common variants in these areas are excessive use, withdrawal, tolerance, and negative repercussions, all of which stems from this disorder (The Storage Engine, 2015).
This indirect dependence on the internet is simply a reflection of our direct dependence on it. We have made it so that nothing can get done without the World Wide Web. A phone plan coming without an internet connection is almost ludicrous to some these days and is the premise of what most cell phone packages are based on; adults rely on it for the daily newspapers, current events, planning, and such; and most especially in children, teenagers and young adults is the addiction most apparent, and with the constant emergence of new social media outlets, software updates, user interface upgrades, there is no slowing down anytime soon, as everything related to the interests of young persons is almost internet related.
